Our preschool environment has been carefully designed to meet the needs of children aged 3 to 6, which Dr. Montessori describes as having “absorbent minds.”
The teacher acts as a guide and facilitator. Children receive sequential lessons to improve their skills and independence. After reading the materials, children are happy to choose their own classes.
Within three hours each morning, children engage in various activities. They can practice taking care of themselves or in the classroom working on writing words. Some children may work together to solve a large equation with manipulative mathematical materials. Others can take care of plants by watering or washing the leaves. Montessori materials, presented with joy and freely chosen, create a strong foundation for reading, writing, creativity, critical thinking and participation in an active, diverse community. Children who are three years old have become calm, proud and compassionate leaders for younger children. They have learned to think alone, they are happy to approach learning and self-regulate their emotions for social harmony.
“Never help a child in a task that can succeed.”– Maria Montessori
